Yet, when couples suffer from a problem named infertility, all attention goes to the woman. But one sees with shock that in approximately half of cases, male fertility plays just as big a role. And the good news? Sperm health is one of the medical aspects that is affected by lifestyle choices. It can be improved by incorporating simple habits.

Dr Madhu Patil, Consultant – Fertility Specialist, Motherhood Fertility and IVF, Bangalore, says, “Sperm health is equally about the quality, apart from the quantity of the sperm. Quality matters too, things like how well the sperm move (motility), their shape (morphology), and their overall ability to fertilise an egg. And all of these factors are directly influenced by everyday choices from what one eats to how much sleep one gets.”

Smoking

Let’s begin with the most obvious offender, smoking. She further explains that cigarettes are loaded with noxious toxins that degrade sperm DNA, cut sperm numbers and speed, and impair motility. If a guy is aiming to become a father, giving up cigarettes is one of the best things he can do for his fertility. And it’s not just cigarettes vaping, booze, and party drugs all have an identical damaging effect.

Diet

Then there’s diet. A diet comprising highly processed foods, trans fats, and added sugar leads to inflammation and oxidative stress. While some fats are responsible for building sperm, others, as part of a balanced diet, can destroy it. Healthy and strong sperm can occur with a balanced diet of colourful fruits and vegetables, whole grains, a few quality lean proteins, and some healthy fats, which include omega-3s sourced from fish or nuts.

Weight

Weight is also a key player. Hormone balances can be affected by being underweight or overweight, which can decrease sperm counts. Even losing 5-10% of body weight in obese men can improve sperm quality. With that said, all adults should be getting regular exercise even just 30 minutes of daily brisk walking can be a miracle worker. But here’s a little warning: intense exercise, particularly that which includes anabolic steroids or too much heat (consider saunas or hot tubs), actually decreases sperm count.

Temperature

Talking of temperature, laptop computers, snug undergarments, and sitting for long periods (such as hours spent driving or working at a desk) can bring the temperature close to the testicles. And because sperm require a slightly cooler temperature to grow, all of these can impact fertility. So easy exchanges such as looser boxers, standing breaks at work, and keeping that laptop on a desk rather than on your lap will do the trick.

Stress

Stress also plays a sneaky role. Too much stress hormone in the body can disrupt testosterone and sperm production. Relaxation methods, normal sleep, yoga, or simply spending time enjoying things that one finds delightful all of these serve to reduce stress levels and maintain hormonal balance.

Sleep

Lastly, sleep. Target 7 8 hours of sleep each night. Sleep is the time when the body recharges and regenerates including the reproductive system. Neglecting sleep can influence hormone levels and decrease sperm quality.

In summary, sperm health is an ever-changing variable, in a positive way, so it is not fixed. The more time and lifestyle changes, the better. And of course, when you make changes, the sooner the better if you want to increase your chances of achieving natural fertility.
