BYD’s just thrown the covers off its first foreign-market EV.

But now, BYD’s first exclusively foreign-market EV is here.

And it’s a Japan-only city car that is set to challenge US and Japanese makers.

BYD’s newest offering to compete in Japan

BYD has just revealed something very interesting in the last couple of days.

The premier Chinese brand has just announced a brand-new project.

It is, to be precise, BYD’s first-ever foreign-market EV.

But which foreign market is this brand new EV focused on?

Well, it turns out that BYD’s focus has turned to the Japanese market.

BYD’s Japanese website has revealed a teaser image of its first-ever K car.

The car in question is set to make its debut at the Tokyo Motor Show in a few weeks.

From the side profile teaser, the new vehicle adopts the box-shaped design common among Japanese kei cars.

At the moment, this new model is set to be exclusively sold in Japan.

Unlike other box-shaped cars, BYD’s offering appears to be more spacious.

It features a shorter front end and a longer wheelbase with short overhangs.

Owners can also reportedly expect a sliding rear door.

In terms of power, the new car is expected to be equipped with a 20kWh Blade Battery.

And that battery is capable of achieving a range of 180km under WLTC conditions.

K car caps off an unbelievable year for China

BYD’s move to the Japanese market comes at an interesting time for the brand.

And that is because BYD has absolutely taken the global EV market by storm.

In truth, BYD’s rise began towards the end of 2024.

But Tesla’s enduring dominance ensured that the rise went under the radar.

This year, however, has been a completely different story.

The Chinese market, as a whole, has absolutely blitzed the global EV market.

Brands such as XPeng and Geely have been part of the charge.

But it’s BYD that has spearheaded the surge towards the top of the charts.

And this year has seen BYD achieve some truly milestone achievements.

It officially outsold Tesla in Europe twice during the space of four months.

Tesla also found itself overtaken in the UK market by the Chinese marque.

Could this new K car secure BYD dominance in yet another market?
