Bayern Munich midfielder Aleksandar Pavlovic has expressed his disappointment at Mathys Tel leaving the club for Tottenham Hotspur. Tel joined Spurs on loan during the winter transfer window and has now made his move permanent in a deal worth close to £30million.

Pavlovic, a Germany international, was still in Bayern’s academy when Tel joined the club from Rennes in 2022. The pair played more than 20 times together for Bayern, mostly in the 2023-24 season, and started together for the final time in a Champions League victory over Slovan Bratislava in January this year.

“Personally, I think it’s a shame,” Pavlovic told Sky Sport Deutschland. “He was a very good friend of mine and still is. In the end, he and the club made the decision. That’s the way it is, unfortunately.”

Tel’s permanent move to North London was confirmed on Sunday. He becomes the first new arrival of the Thomas Frank era, with manager Frank taking over from Ange Postecoglou.

The 20-year-old scored three goals in 20 appearances during his loan spell, including two in the Premier League. He featured in both legs of the Europa League semi-final victory over Bodo/Glimt, but was an unused substitute in the final as Spurs beat Manchester United 1-0 to lift the trophy.

Tel will link back up with his club colleagues after the ongoing European Under-21 Championships. He is part of France’s squad for the tournament, as is fellow Spurs forward Wilson Odobert.

France claimed a dramatic late victory against Georgia after drawing their opener against Portugal, with Thierno Barry scoring a stoppage-time winner. A point against already-eliminated Poland will see them through to the quarter-finals – the stage at which they were eliminated in the 2023 edition of thr tournament.

Bayern’s sale of Tel comes hot on the heels of Leroy Sane’s move to Galatasaray. Germany winger Sane has been at the Allianz Arena for the last five seasons, but has signed a big-money three-year deal with the Turkish side.

Despite the squad changes, Vincent Kompany’s side made a winning start to their Club World Cup campaign over the weekend. They claimed a massive 10-0 win against Oceania champions Auckland City, with Jamal Musiala coming off the bench to score a hat-trick.

“Job done. We played really seriously and did what we had to do,” Bayern boss Kompany said after the win. “Goal difference might end up being important in this group. We said beforehand that it’ll be about attacking perseverance in all likelihood.

“When a team sits back and defends well, it’s not a given that you score 10 goals. And that’s why we couldn’t have done much more today. The highlight for me was Jamal Musiala’s defensive sprint. And if you’re doing that in this sort of game, then you’ve got a good foundation.”
