Barcelona and Inter played out a breathless six-goal thriller that leaves this Champions League semi-final perfectly poised for the second leg next week.
Inter came into the game having failed to score in three games – each of which they lost – since the second leg of their quarter-final against Bayern Munich. In that time, they had gone a total of 299 minutes without scoring a single goal.
On the back of a run like that, nobody could have foreseen them scoring the quickest semi-final goal in the history of the Champions League.
Taking advantage of Barcelona’s high line, they raced in behind and threw men forward. Denzel Dumfries crossed low, and Marcus Thuram improvised brilliantly to flick the ball into the net. Following a five-hour drought, it took Inter just 30 seconds to break the deadlock here.
And things got even better for the visitors as provider turned goalscorer to double their lead. Francesco Acerbi headed down from a Federico Dimarco corner, and Dumfries converted acrobatically from close range. In doing so, he became the first Dutch player to both score and assist in a Champions League semi-final since Wesley Sneijder, who also did so for Inter against Barcelona in the first leg of the tie. On that occasion, back in 2009-10, Inter scored three goals in that first leg, and went on to win the Champions League.
At this stage of the game, Barcelona, who have looked pretty unbeatable all year, appeared dead and buried. Fortunately for the Spaniards, they were able to call on the ridiculous talent that is Lamine Yamal.
At 17 years, 291 days old on the day of the game, Yamal was making his 100th Barcelona appearance, and became the second-youngest player to start a Champions League semi-final after Julian Draxler (17y & 226d) for Schalke against Manchester United in 2010-11. The youngster almost single-handedly dragged Barcelona back into the game.
With his side struggling for attacking inspiration, Yamal danced his way through the Inter defence before curling an effort in off the far post with goalkeeper Yann Sommer rooted.

That gave Barcelona the spark they needed, and soon after they were level. Pedri crossed to the back post, Raphinha headed down and Ferran Torres scored from close range after missing the target on two previous chances.
That assist meant the Brazilian moved to 20 goal involvements in the Champions League this season, the second most by any player in a single campaign after Cristiano Ronaldo’s 21 in 2013-14.

Meanwhile, only Luis Figo (nine in 1999-2000) has ever registered more assists in a season in the history of the Champions League than Raphinha (eight) has in 2024-25.
With so much early action, the match became only the second Champions League semi-final ever to see at least four goals scored in the first 38 minutes, after Man Utd vs Juventus in April 1999.
And the drama didn’t stop after the break. Inter wing-back Dumfries, who had before this game scored only one goal in 39 appearances in the competition, got his second of the night, rising highest at another corner to head past Wojciech Szczesny and into the net.
This time, however, the visitors’ lead lasted less than two minutes as Barcelona hit back with a set-piece goal of their own. Only this one was rather more spectacular.
Dani Olmo played a pass to Yamal on the edge of the box, and the teenager ran over the ball, leaving it to Raphinha. The former Leeds man struck a thunderbolt of a shot and came within a few inches of moving level with Ronaldo for the most goal involvements in a Champions League season. He probably won’t mind too much, though, as his effort cannoned off the crossbar and into the net off the back of a helpless Sommer in the Inter goal.
The breathlessness continued, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan denied a goal by the most marginal of offside calls and Yamal then looping a late effort off the woodwork.
Nobody could find a winner, though, and an instant Champions League classic ended in a stalemate that sets up the return game in Milan next week wonderfully. We, for one, cannot wait.
