As Super Typhoon Ragasa approaches, here are the biggest storms in Hong Kong’s history

Hong Kong is bracing for the approach of Super Typhoon Ragasa, which falls into the category of storms with maximum sustained wind speeds of 185km/h (115mph) or above near their centres.

The passage of Ragasa, a Filipino word meaning rapid or fast motion, will be the latest in a line of superstorms that have struck the city over the decades.

The Post looks back at the past seven super typhoons that have triggered a No 10 signal, the city’s highest storm warning, since records began in 1946.

1. Saola (2023)

Saola’s maximum sustained wind speed near its centre reached 210km/h by the time a No 8 warning was issued.

The storm then skirted Hong Kong at a distance of 40km (24.8 miles) on September 1, 2023, prompting the No 10 hurricane signal to be issued for nearly 7½ hours.

While Saola proved to be intense, the number of injured came to 86, far fewer than in past superstorms.

The super typhoon caused flooding across the city and disrupted several main roads.
