Vibrant colours, perfect symmetry, and an air of whimsy — yep, I’m talking about Wes Anderson’s signature style. The director has wowed audiences all over the world with his visual language. His cinematography also inspired a wave of creatives to create “Wes Anderson-esque” photographs and videos imitating his iconic style. Accidentally Wes Anderson is a global project that compiles such works, and it’s now coming to Hong Kong for the first time. Don’t miss out on this exhibition, running from now until September 14 at The Mills in Tsuen Wan and AIRSIDE in Kai Tak.
After visiting Seoul, London, Tokyo, Melbourne, Los Angeles, and more, Accidentally Wes Anderson is now opening in Hong Kong! The exhibition has garnered more than 1 million visitors worldwide. Featuring more than 100 real-life photographs, it’s a space to celebrate the acclaimed director’s long-lasting impact. On top of the exhibition, visitors can also shop for exclusive merch and join exciting activities.
Accidentally Wes Anderson features a special Hong Kong theme
For its stop at The Mills, the exhibition will be divided into five themed zones. The first one is dedicated to Hong Kong, featuring photographs taken in our city and interactive photo spots. The other zones highlight hotels, doors & facades, pools, and lighthouses — all very common sights in Wes Anderson’s movies. Meanwhile, over at AIRSIDE, visitors can view the Transport Zone and the Nature Zone until August 10. Regardless of which zone you enter, all of them will have the signature vivid shades and centred framing characteristic of the director’s style.
After exploring the exhibition at The Mills, don’t forget to stop by the pop-up store at the CHAT Shop. All the souvenirs are designed with the same colour palette and symmetrical aesthetics as Wes Anderson’s cinematography. It’s a perfect memento to bring home after the exhibition.
Explore interactive activities and screenings
Aside from admiring the photographs, visitors can also take part in exciting activities. For HKD 30 or 600 (USD 3.82 or 76.43) NF Points, guests can redeem an AWA Stamp Passport. Those who fill the passport with all six stamps hidden around The Mills can redeem an embroidery pin exclusive to Accidentally Wes Anderson Hong Kong. Those who complete this can also enjoy special merchant offers.
Want to create your own Wes Anderson moment? Dress up and take a picture at the AWA Photobooth. For HKD 60 (USD 7.64) per strip, visitors can imagine themselves in a Wes Anderson movie. There will also be costumes and props available on-site to make your vision come to life.
Of course, an homage to the director wouldn’t be complete without a screening of his movies. On August 9, The Mills is hosting four screenings of his works. The selection includes The Grand Budapest Hotel, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Isle of Dogs, and a “Blind Box” screening. Admission is HKD 60 (USD 7.64) per person and includes a movie ticket, an AWA Passport, and a poster, distributed randomly.
