Global EV battery market share in Jan-Sept 2025: CATL 36.6%, BYD 17.9%

CATL (HKG: 3750) and BYD (HKG: 1211) continued to dominate the global electric vehicle (EV) battery market during January-September, despite slight declines in market share compared to January-August.

Global EV battery installations totaled 811.7 GWh from January to September, a 34.7 percent increase from 602.4 GWh during the same period last year, according to data released yesterday by South Korean market research firm SNE Research.

CATL’s EV battery installations reached 297.2 GWh from January to September, a 31.5 percent increase from 226.0 GWh during the same period last year.

The Chinese battery giant maintained its global leadership with a 36.6 percent market share during this period, remaining the only supplier exceeding 30 percent market share worldwide.

This figure is lower than its 37.5 percent share in January-September 2024 and also below its 36.8 percent share in January-August 2025.

BYD’s EV battery installations came in at 145.0 GWh in January-September, a 45.6 percent increase from 99.6 GWh in the same period last year.

The company ranked second with a 17.9 percent share in January-September, up from 16.5 percent in January-September 2024 but below its 18.0 percent share in January-August 2025.

LG Energy Solution’s battery installations for January-September reached 79.7 GWh, a 14.7 percent year-on-year increase.

The South Korean company maintained third place with a 9.8 percent share during January-September, down from 11.5 percent in the same period last year but higher than its 9.7 percent share for January-August 2025.

China’s CALB (HKG: 3931) ranked fourth with a 4.8 percent share, South Korea’s SK On ranked fifth with 4.2 percent, and Japan’s Panasonic ranked sixth with 4.1 percent.

China’s Gotion High-tech, South Korea’s Samsung SDI, China’s Eve Energy, and Svolt Energy ranked seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth respectively, with market shares of 3.7 percent, 2.8 percent, 2.7 percent, and 2.5 percent during January-September.

CATL’s market share in September increased by 0.47 percentage points compared to August, while BYD’s share grew by 0.22 percentage points.
