Barcelona-Villarreal match in Miami cancelled

The Spanish football league (La Liga) announced yesterday that it is canceling the planned league match between Villarreal and Barcelona in Miami, in the United States.

“La Liga informs that, after discussions with the promoter of the match in Miami, the latter has made the decision to cancel the event due to the uncertainty that has prevailed in Spain in recent weeks,” the statement said.

The league expressed regret that it could not take advantage of “this historic opportunity” to organize a Spanish championship match abroad for the first time.

La Liga’s attempts to hold a match in the US date back to 2018, when Barcelona and Girona were scheduled to play a match in Miami, but the project was blocked after FIFA and the Spanish Football Federation refused to give their consent.
