An earthquake of magnitude 5.66 struck the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border on Friday, with a depth of 10 kilometer, reported the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).

The earthquake came only a few hours after a 4.3-magnitude earthquake had struck Afghanistan early on Friday at around 5:23 am, roughly 133 kilometres east of Kabul, the country’s capital. According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the tremor originated at a depth of 10 kilometers, with its epicentre located at latitude 34.57°N and longitude 70.66°E.

In a separate incident later in the morning, tremors were also felt in India’s Arunachal Pradesh, where an earthquake of 3.2 magnitude was reported in East Kameng district at 8:42 am. The NCS data showed that the epicentre was about 89 kilometres west-northwest of Itanagar, situated at latitude 27.51°N and longitude 92.84°E, also at a depth of 10 kilometres.

Recently, a major earthquake hit Afghanistan in early September, leaving over 800 dead and at least 2,800 injured.

The quake killed 812 people in the eastern provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar, administration spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid had then said.

Multiple aftershocks have rattled eastern Afghanistan following the recent deadly earthquake. The country, located in a seismically active zone, has a long history of powerful quakes and recurring tragedies of this kind over the years.
