Live updates: UK to recognize Palestinian statehood

The UK is set to recognize a Palestinian state today after Israel failed to meet a host of conditions set out by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Starmer is expected to confirm the move after concluding the situation in Gaza has deteriorated since he urged Israel to change course over the summer, PA Media reported.

The UK is one of a host of countries, including Canada and France, due to recognize a Palestinian state, in a symbolic move that will add to Israel’s diplomatic isolation as the war in Gaza nears its second anniversary.

Starmer’s upcoming announcement will make good on his pledge in July to recognize a Palestinian state if Israel fails to agree to a ceasefire and revive the prospect of a two-state solution – conditions Israel has rejected.

The UK move comes despite pressure from US politicians, who say it will impact Israel’s security, as well as families of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza. Last week, US President Donald Trump said during a visit to the UK that recognizing Palestine was one of “the few disagreements” between the two allies.

Starmer has stressed that the recognition of a Palestinian state is in no way a win for Hamas, which they say must not play a role in any future governance of the enclave.

Israel has described recognizing a Palestinian state as rewarding terror.
