BEST: Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett Johansson looked magical at the North American premiere of her directorial debut, Eleanor the Great. The 40-year-old actress wore a blush-coloured Valentino dress for the red carpet, where the look featured off-the-shoulder straps and a draped neckline. The gown also had a touch of drama with a small train, and its open-back design showed off Johansson’s floral back tattoo.

Accessorizing with sparkling drop earrings and a sleek up-do hairstyle, the star shone at the screening for her new film, which tells the story of a nonagenarian who — while mourning her late friend — assumes her identity as a Holocaust survivor.

WORST: Emily Blunt

Emily Blunt went for a more daring red carpet look than usual for the premiere of The Smashing Machine, but the 42-year-old star’s risk didn’t necessarily pay off. The actress wore a black ensemble by Stella McCartney, attending alongside her husband, John Krasinski. Her outfit featured a triangular cut-out halter top with sheer lace panels tucked into black striped trousers.

It was a sultry-meets-casual look for the event, possibly hinting at the grittiness seen in the new Dwayne Johnson-starring movie, which tells the story of pioneering mixed martial arts/UFC fighter Mark Kerr. But it’s best if Blunt sticks to what she knows best on red carpets from now on — full glamour.

BEST: Michaela Coel

Michaela Coel arguably wore one of the most inspiring looks ever seen at TIFF for the premiere of the new movie she stars in, The Christophers. The 37-year-old actress wore an espresso-toned Sudanese toub tailored by Hiba Rahma, and told Vogue the look was a tribute to the women who’ve always been at the frontlines of every revolution in Sudan.

“The toub made me feel elegant and powerful,” the star explained, adding she chose the brown colour to recognize the beauty of dark-skinned women, who often face prejudice and persecution in the African country.

Coel looked divine in the ensemble, which featured henna on her arms as well as gold pieces from Kuku Jewellery and a custom grill from Alighieri. It was a head-turning way to show she’s the queen of her new movie, which also stars James Corden and Jessica Gunning as the children of a renowned artist who hire Coel’s character in hopes of securing an inheritance.

WORST: Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman has never looked terrible on a red carpet, but the look she wore to the North American premiere of Arco — an animated movie she produced about a 10-year-old kid who time travels from 2932 to 2075 — was a bit too bland for what we’ve seen at TIFF this year.

The actress paired the little black dress from Jacquemus with open-toe heels that made the ensemble err too much on the side of casualness. The one-shoulder neckline also made the 44-year-old star appear trapped and uncomfortable at the event.

BEST: Felicity Jones

On the other hand, Felicity Jones didn’t hesitate to give red carpet watchers a fiery show for the premiere of Train Dreams, a Netflix movie about a logger in the Pacific Northwest who’s working to develop the railroad across the U.S.

The 41-year-old actress wore a floor-length Prada gown for the event, a look that featured open sides and a cape train. The piece commanded all the attention in the moment, pairing Jones’s elegance with a sharp look that was almost as sleek as water.

WORST: Mia Goth

Mia Goth was another star at TIFF who opted for a look that was too simple for her own good. The 31-year-old actress wore a custom white halter gown from Nina Ricci for the premiere of Frankenstein, which she stars in alongside Jacob Elordi and Oscar Isaac.

Goth’s outfit featured a black waistband, a stunning gold necklace featuring purple gemstones and a clean middle-part hairstyle. But it’s one look that’s easily forgettable amid a busy festival full of glamour and grandeur.

BEST: Channing Tatum

Taking a moment to look at some men’s style at this year’s TIFF, Channing Tatum was the epitome of effortless chicness for the premiere of Roofman. The 45-year-old actor wore one dashing look after another for the festival, but his oversized grey striped suit from Saint Laurent takes the cake.

It was a look that felt comfortable, suave and ideal for red carpet menswear, slightly pushing the limits of masculine fashion without doing too much. Add on a fresh buzz cut, and you’re easily dripping in cool confidence that’s worthy of any attention.

WORST: Daniel Craig

But opting for a casual fit doesn’t always pay dividends on the red carpet. Daniel Craig attended the premiere of Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery wearing an outfit that looked like something you’d wear around the house, not a high-end event.

The 57-year-old actor wore a white double-breasted suit jacket like a cardigan, pairing the piece with matching baggy pants, a blue shirt and off-white sneakers. He also wore two chains, one gold and one silver, along with a silver watch.

BEST: Kirsten Dunst

The fashion gods were at the top of their game for the premiere of Roofman, with Kirsten Dunst looking like a royal fairy in a Valentino Resort 2026 dress. The seafoam-coloured piece featured an off-the-shoulder neckline and two centre cutouts, along with a ruched bodice and sleek skirt.

Attending the movie about “Rooftop Robber” Jeffrey Manchester and how he tried to avoid capture, 43-year-old Dunst looked immaculate and ready to own the red carpet.

WORST: Anya Taylor-Joy

Anya Taylor-Joy can evoke beauty in any room she walks in, including when she arrived for the premiere of Sacrifice. But the light blue custom Dior dress she wore erred on the side of a feather duster as opposed to high-fashion couture.

Starring in the satirical thriller film about an environmental conference gone wrong, the 29-year-old star attended the screening in the sleeveless look, which also featured a structured skirt designed in a woven pattern.
