Aston Villa defender Alex Moreno set to complete move to Girona

Alex Moreno is set to complete a move to Girona from Aston Villa.

The left-back will undergo his medical tomorrow ahead of signing a two-year contract.

The Athletic revealed in July that Girona had made an approach for Moreno, after he was left out of Villa’s pre-season tour to the United States, with the club making clear he was out of Unai Emery’s plans. Moreno has agreed reduced terms to accelerate the transfer and will join Girona from Villa with no fee involved

Moreno spent last season on loan at Nottingham Forest, with Lucas Digne’s presence and Ian Maatsen’s arrival at Villa meaning that competition for left-back minutes increased. The 32-year-old featured in 19 games in all competitions during his spell at the City Ground, recording one assist, and helped the side achieve a seventh-place finish in the Premier League.

Moreno joined Villa in January 2023 from Spanish side Real Betis in a deal worth €15million (£13.3m), becoming a staple of the side and appearing in 19 league games.

He competed for the starting left-back role with Digne in the following season but made 29 appearances in all competitions and helping Unai Emery’s side finish fourth in the table and achieve qualification for the Champions League. Villa also reached the semi-finals of the Conference League, where they were defeated 6-2 on aggregate by eventual winners Olympiacos.

Moreno, who is also capable of operating in a more advanced role on the left-hand side, has played 48 games for Villa in total, scoring three times and providing three assists.

After spending time in Barcelona’s academy, Moreno joined Spanish lower-league club Llagostera in 2012. He joined Mallorca the following year, where he spent one season, before signing for Rayo Vallecano in 2014. He spent five years with the Madrid-based club before moving to Betis in 2019. Moreno recorded six goals and 14 assists in 122 games for Betis and was part of the side that won the 2021-22 Copa del Rey, the club’s first major trophy since 2005.
