Cristiano Ronaldo made a surprise appearance at a Hong Kong museum dedicated to his career, drawing crowds of fans who had waited for hours outside the venue during his visit for the Saudi Super Cup.
The football superstar arrived at the CR7 Life Museum in the K11 Musea shopping center in Tsim Sha Tsui on Sunday, where fans gathered at the entrance and cheered as he toured the exhibition, the South China Morning Post reported.
Ronaldo briefly stepped outside and appeared ready to sign jerseys offered by supporters but retreated after some pushed against the barricades. He left about half an hour later.
The CR7 Life Museum, which opened last month, showcases the Portuguese forward’s decorated career and achievements.
Dozens of fans had gathered outside the shopping center as early as 1 p.m. on Sunday after rumors of Ronaldo’s visit spread online.
Among the crowd were couple Dong Ruiyu and Li Yue from Hebei Province, who said they had arrived in Hong Kong a day earlier for the Saudi Cup.
“We came specifically to see Ronaldo,” Dong said, as cited by SCMP. “It would be very lucky if we could really run into him.”
The pair said their daily budget was about HK$800 (US$102) to HK$1,000, mainly covering accommodation and food.
Hong Kong will host the Saudi Super Cup from Tuesday to Saturday at the Hong Kong Stadium. Four clubs, Al-Nassr, Al-Ittihad, Al-Qadisiyah and Al-Ahli, will compete in the event, which marks the first time the tournament has been staged in East Asia.
K11 said its summer line-up of sports-themed events, including the Ronaldo museum, pop-up stores and a meet-and-greet with Arsenal players, boosted footfall at the shopping center in July by 30% compared with the monthly average.
This is the second instalment of the CR7 Museum, after the first one opened in 2013 in Ronaldo’s birthplace, Funchal, Portugal. Unlike its Portuguese precursor, the Hong Kong museum is set to run for only a year, Hong Kong Free Press reported.
