Germany, United Kingdom, Israel, Poland, Greece, Sweden Drive Massive Tourism Revenue for Cyprus in 2024: What more you need to know?

Tuesday, July 22, 2025

As one of the Mediterranean’s most popular luxury holiday destinations, Cyprus impresses visitors once again in 2024, reeling in an impressive €3.2 billion thanks to the tourism sector. With growing numbers of international arrivals and resident spending, the island nation has crystalized itself on the map of top European destinations. Paphos, a city full of history and culture at Cyprus’s scenic shoreline, was the favourite place for travellers, welcoming more than 31 out of the island’s total tourist attendance. Total arrivals for the year increased by 2.9% – particularly from the UK, Israel, Poland and Germany.

Cyprus’s appeal is unarguable, with beautiful countryside, a coastline of blue flag-awarded beaches, and a wealth of history combined with great local food and drink. Here we outline the aspects underpinning the tourism boom in Cyprus in 2024, specifically for Paphos: the flagship destination in this regard and what it means for both holidaymakers and the local economy.

Cyprus Tourism in 2024: A Record-Breaking Year

Cyprus’s tourism industry reached new heights in 2024, with a total of 6,285,427 arrivals, representing a 2.9% growth compared to the previous year. These impressive statistics reflect the island’s enduring appeal as a top-tier vacation spot in Europe. In fact, the total tourism revenue surged by 7.3%, amounting to €3.2 billion, with significant contributions from both leisure and business travelers.

While the overall tourism sector showed positive growth, the most noteworthy trend was the increasing number of visitors to Paphos. As the island’s cultural and archaeological center, Paphos offers travelers a blend of ancient ruins, modern amenities, and pristine beaches. With nearly 31.5% of all tourists staying in Paphos, it has become the undisputed leader among Cyprus’s popular destinations.

Why Paphos is Leading the Charge in Cyprus Tourism

Paphos has long been a key player in Cyprus’s tourism industry, but 2024 marked a new chapter in its prominence. The city’s ancient history, with attractions such as the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Tombs of the Kings and Kato Paphos Archaeological Park, combined with a range of luxury resorts and vibrant cultural activities, has made it a magnet for international tourists.

The city’s appeal is enhanced by its Mediterranean climate, spectacular coastline, and the welcoming atmosphere of its locals. In 2024, Paphos attracted travelers from a variety of countries, notably the United Kingdom, which remained the largest source of tourism for Cyprus, accounting for 34% of total arrivals. Other notable contributors included Israel, Poland, and Germany, whose nationals made up significant portions of the visitor demographics.

The Economic Impact of Cyprus’s Tourism Growth

The growth of Cyprus’s tourism industry has had a significant economic impact on the country. The €3.2 billion generated in 2024 is a clear indicator of the sector’s importance to the nation’s economy. This surge in revenue reflects a rise in the average expenditure per person, which increased by 2.1% from the previous year, amounting to €794.40 per tourist.

The spike in revenue has been attributed to various factors, including the post-pandemic recovery, greater accessibility to the island through improved air travel connections, and a diversified tourism offering that appeals to both family vacationers and business travelers.

In particular, the month of August saw the highest monthly expenditure, with visitors spending an average of €921.59 per person, showcasing the peak season for Cyprus tourism. Meanwhile, the lower spending months, such as January, saw an average of €513.32 per person.

Key Destinations in Cyprus: Beyond Paphos

While Paphos has emerged as the most popular destination, Cyprus boasts a range of other destinations that continue to draw tourists. Ayia Napa, known for its lively nightlife and golden beaches, captured 15.9% of the tourist market. Larnaca, with its blend of traditional Cypriot charm and modernity, attracted 14.2%, while Limassol and Paralimni followed with 12.4% and 11.4%, respectively.

These destinations, along with Nicosia, the capital city, offer a variety of experiences that appeal to different types of travelers. Whether it’s exploring the rich cultural heritage of Larnaca, enjoying the beach resorts of Ayia Napa, or immersing oneself in the local traditions of Limassol, Cyprus offers a diverse tourism experience that caters to every preference.

Air Travel Dominates Cyprus Tourism: Strong International Connectivity

Air traffic remains the primary mode of travel for visitors to Cyprus, with 97.7% of all arrivals and departures occurring by air. This trend highlights the increasing accessibility of Cyprus through direct flights from major European hubs. The country’s Larnaca International Airport and Paphos International Airport continue to serve as key gateways, welcoming millions of passengers each year.

Cyprus’s strong international connectivity, particularly with markets like the United Kingdom, Israel, and Germany, ensures that the island remains a popular choice for European travelers seeking a blend of historical exploration and beach relaxation.

The Rise in Cypriot Outbound Travel

In 2024, the number of trips made by Cypriot residents also increased, with 1.75 million outbound trips recorded, a 4.4% rise compared to 2023. Greece was the most popular destination for Cypriot travelers, accounting for 34.7% of outbound trips, followed by the United Kingdom (10.5%) and Italy (5.2%).

Most Cypriots traveled abroad for leisure, with 72.5% citing holidays as the primary reason for their trips. This trend is a testament to the growing global mobility of Cypriot residents and the interconnectedness of Cyprus with the wider world.

Conclusion: Cyprus’s Tourism Future Looks Bright

The tourism sector in Cyprus has demonstrated impressive growth in 2024, setting the stage for even further success in the coming years. With Paphos leading the way as the top destination, and other cities like Ayia Napa, Larnaca, and Limassol continuing to attract diverse crowds, Cyprus remains a key player in the Mediterranean tourism market. The increase in both the number of arrivals and overall revenue showcases the strength and resilience of the island’s tourism industry.

As Cyprus continues to expand its appeal through improved infrastructure and a diverse array of experiences, travelers can expect more exciting developments in the years ahead. With its combination of historical landmarks, stunning beaches, and welcoming atmosphere, Cyprus promises to remain a prime destination for international tourists seeking a Mediterranean escape.
