Lotito holds on to Rovella, pushes Spalletti and Gravina to resign

Lazio President Claudio Lotito reiterates Nicolò Rovella ‘is not on the transfer market’ and hints Italy coach Luciano Spalletti and FIGC President Gabriele Gravina should resign.

The patron was attending the Festival della Serie A event in Parma today and spoke to reporters about last night’s debacle, where the Azzurri were swept aside 3-0 by Norway in the opening World Cup qualifier.

“I watched the game. The result certainly reflects the quality of the team that is not that of our glorious past,” said Lotito.

“I do not express judgment, I think history will do it for me. Missing out on the World Cup again would be dramatic for Italy. These defeats hurt the whole football ecosystem, damages credibility and quality.

“We were once considered the best in the world, so seeing this project sink will only create problems for everyone.”

Gravina blamed for Italy debacle by Lotito

Lotito is famously no friend of FIGC President Gravina, having battled repeatedly to get him deposed, so there was never any doubt who he would point the finger of blame at.

“I don’t know the situation and therefore pass no judgment. I would simply pose myself a question, if the same results keep happening systematically, on what we should do to stop it happening again.”

What would Lotito do about this situation to improve Italy’s prospects?

“My recipe for success is tied to merit. Clearly, when someone is in a role and does not get results, he must assume a clear position to show respect for collective interest.

“If someone is just focused on protecting his position, then he will stay there for life. When Lazio isn’t working, the responsibility is down to the President, so ask yourself a question and give yourself an answer.”

Lotito was also pressed on the reports that Lazio midfielder Rovella, who started last night’s match for Italy and was hauled off at half-time, has been linked with Inter and Milan.

So how much is Rovella worth?

“I don’t know, because he is not on the transfer market,” was the response.
