The airline operates Airbus A330 aircraft for its international services, which are equipped with business class flatbed seats offering a comfortable alternative to economy travel.

Though these business class seats provide a significant upgrade for passengers—especially on the lengthy 9+ hour overnight flights—they are not the most advanced in the market. Compared to competitors like Cathay Pacific and Qantas, the onboard amenities fall short in some areas. The in-flight entertainment system features smaller screens, and the cabins lack modern conveniences such as USB power outlets for personal devices.

Nevertheless, passengers seeking a step up from economy will find these offerings appealing, with the flatbed seats designed for better rest during long-haul travel. Economy travelers, however, will still face the standard recliner seats, which can be less comfortable on overnight legs.

Benefits for Frequent Flyers

An additional incentive for travelers comes from Hong Kong Airlines’ partnership with Virgin Australia’s Velocity frequent flyer program. Velocity Gold and Platinum members flying with Hong Kong Airlines gain access to perks like increased baggage allowances, priority check-in, and priority boarding—features that enhance the overall travel experience.

However, it is worth noting that Velocity members currently cannot redeem their points for Hong Kong Airlines flights, as the airline is not yet a ‘points redemption partner.’ This means frequent flyers looking to use Velocity points for budget-friendly trips to Hong Kong will have to wait until such options become available.

Founded in 2006, Hong Kong Airlines has steadily grown into a key player in the Asia-Pacific aviation scene. The carrier positions itself as a direct competitor to Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong’s flagship airline, as well as Cathay’s low-cost subsidiary, HK Express.

By entering the Australian market more robustly, Hong Kong Airlines aims to capitalize on growing travel demand between Hong Kong and Australia, fueled by business travelers, tourists, and diaspora communities.
