July 1st this year marks the 27th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to the motherland. VR x GBA, a flagship program of the Southern Finance Omnimedia Corp. International Communication Centre, the Greater Bay Area Metaverse International Communication Lab (GBA MIC Lab) and the 21st Century Business Herald, launched Hong Kong VR Journey: From Bustling Urban Landscape to Magnificent Folk Spectacle, a special 4K VR 360 degrees panoramic city exploring micro-documentary, presenting global audience with an unique window into the vitality and prosperity of this world-renowned events capital in a highly immersive way.

Events Capital: Hong Kong’s Infinite Possibilities

From world-class theme parks to heritage architecture, iconic landmarks to fascinating Chinese temples, Hong Kong is an eclectic city with its unique East-meets-West culture, where it blends the old and the new, urban and nature, activity and relaxation in compelling ways. In 2024, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government announced plans to bolster its mega event economy, with over 210 mega events slated throughout the year, covering culture and art, sports, finance and trade exhibitions, which will give a big boost to tourism, hotel, catering, retail and many other local sectors. It’s estimated that approximately 1.7 million tourists would take part in these events, during which a total consumption of around HK$7.2 billion would be generated, bringing value-added of about HK$4.3 billion to the Hong Kong economy.

Cheung Chau Bun Scrambling Contest: Vivid Embodiment of Hong Kong’s Diverse Culture

As an indigenous traditional cultural extravaganza in Hong Kong, the Cheung Chau Da Jiu Festival is celebrated on a grand scale on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month every year. The two most eye-catching activities in this centuries-old festival are “Piu Sik (Floating Colours) Parade” and “Bun Scrambling Contest”. About 50,000 tourists from across the world participated in this year’s festival. Streets in Cheung Chau Island were overflowing with the crowds, and Ping On (Peace) Buns were flying off the shelves. With its distinctive cultural and historical connotations, the Cheung Chau Da Jiu Festival vividly epitomizes Hong Kong’s rich cultural tapestry, and it has been included in the third batch of the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of China since 2011. In marked contrast to the bustling and modern downtown area, the Cheung Chau Island gives off a special flavor of the Hong Kong-styled fishing village, which is very rare to find in such a highly-developed cosmopolis.
